Fall for Flamenco Festival Announces 2011 Lineup

September 13, 2011 (Halifax, NS) - The sights and sounds of Spain will again be taking Atlantic Canada by storm this fall as the 6th annual international Fall for Flamenco Festival brings the best in Spanish dance, music and culture to Halifax October 22-30, 2011.

The Fall for Flamenco Festival offers everything flamenco, including performances by guest artists from Spain, introductory workshops in flamenco dance and music, master classes with guest artists, and a library series with 5 free concerts and 3 free workshops held across the HRM.

On October 22nd, the festival kicks off with “El Guitarrazo”, a showcase of flamenco guitar, featuring the best flamenco guitarists in town with Bob Sutherby, Daniel MacNeil, Joey Latta, as well as guest Spanish guitarist Jose Vega. Flamenco is known the world over as one of the most challenging and complex musical forms for the guitar. Come and immerse your soul in the passion of flamenco music!

The highlight performance of this year’s Fall for Flamenco Festival is De España con Amor (FROM SPAIN WITH LOVE) on October 28 at the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium, Dalhousie Arts Centre, featuring renowned guest artists from Spain. Love, passion, humour and drama portrayed through powerful dance, passionate music, and vivid imagery, make this world premiere dance-theatre production an absolute must-see.

Internationally acclaimed flamenco dancer Miguel Tellez is back in Halifax by overwhelming demand. The “Fred Astaire” of flamenco dominates the stage with grace and an astonishing sense of rhythm. Miguel will be joined by the popular Haligonian/Madrid-born dancer Maria Osende, whose dance has been described as “spellbinding”. The compelling sounds of the flamenco soul will be provided by the powerful voice of Maria Mezcle, who at only 24, has become one of Spain’s most promising and accomplished singers. On guitar, adding an authentic Spanish flavour, virtuoso guitarist Jose Vega, as well as the very creative Canadian musician Daniel MacNeil. De España con Amor will be entirely produced and created in Halifax under the award-winning theatrical direction of Anthony Black (2b theatre). Haligonians will experience flamenco as they never have before.

The Festival closes with “The Frightening Fiesta” party on October the 30th at the Seahorse Tavern. Be afraid... be very afraid... of missing out on an incredibly fun evening! Dress up and come celebrate a successful festival! Our Halloween themed closing party features up-and-coming talents and our local flamenco artists, including Compañia Azul and Maria Osende Flamenco Company.

Ticket prices for all events range from complimentary to $38.00 with discounts available to seniors, students and workshop participants.
